"St. Patrick's Day isn't just one day in New Orleans; here, it's turned it into a multi-week celebration with parades, block parties and plenty of corned beef and cabbage."
"Irish History in New Orleans"
"New Orleans is known for its French influence and Spanish culture, but the Irish have left their thumbprint on the city too. Dating back to the seventeenth century, the Irish immigrated to the United States in search of a better life for themselves and their families. Many of these immigrants ended up in South Louisiana. During the 1830's, the Irish were the labor that built the New Basin Canal, a shipping canal that connected Uptown with Lake Pontchartrain. Depending on whose records are most accurate, somewhere between 4,000 and 30,000 Irish workers died from yellow fever while building that canal. Many of those who were lucky enough to survive settled into an area south of Magazine Street that became known as the Irish Channel, and they worked at the nearby Port of New Orleans. That Irish heritage, as well as all Irish history and culture in general, is celebrated every March with parties and parades throughout New Orleans." ~per experienceneworleans.com

Mardi Gras Indians Super Sunday
Starts: 03/24/2025 - Ends: 03/24/2024
"Aside from Mardi Gras Day, the most significant day for the Mardi Gras Indians is their Super Sunday. The New Orleans Mardi Gras Indian Council always has their Indian Sunday on the third Sunday of March, around St. Joseph's Day. Their festivities begin at noon in A.L. Davis Park (at Washington & LaSalle Streets) where the Mardi Gras Indians once again dress in their feathers and suits and take to the streets to meet other "gangs". The Tamborine and Fan organization traditionally put on their annual "Super Sunday" parade on the Sunday closest to St. Joseph's Day, with their event beginning at Bayou St. John. Nobody is completely certain when the tradition of Mardi Gras Indians "masking" on St. Joseph's night began. However, there have been reports of Indians on St. Joseph's night dating back to before World War I. The custom seems to have come about simply because it was a good opportunity. With all of the Catholic Italians celebrating this holiday in the streets, the Indians were able to blend in and celebrate as well. Before 1969, the Indians celebrated by coming out at night to meet and greet other "gangs". In 1969, the first parade was created and rolled through town at night. In 1970, it was switched to a day parade on Sunday afternoon and has continued in that tradition to this day. The daytime parades make the Indians accessible to the general public and allow visitors and locals alike to admire their amazing costumes, crowns, and accessories. If time permits, make it a point to take part in this very unique New Orleans tradition." ~per mardigrasneworlens.com

Chris Owens French Quarter Easter Parade
Starts: 03/31/2024 - Ends: 03/31/2024
"Usually after lunch is the Chris Owens French Quarter Easter Parade. This tradition, which began back in the early 1980s, features renowned French Quarter singer, dancer and all-around entertainer Chris Owens as the Grand Duchess. She stands proudly on her gaily decorated float, assisted by elegantly attired attendants while decked out in one of her stunning, tight-fitting outfits. The parade usually starts at the corner of Canal and Bourbon streets and makes its way through the French Quarter, past the Chris Owens Club at 500 Bourbon, with colorful floats and vintage convertibles and accompanied by one or more of the city's famous brass bands. There are also dance groups and other entertainers. And, of course, since this is a New Orleans parade, there will be plenty of throws – Easter-themed – to catch from the floats and the open-top cars." ~per neworleans.com
