Presented as the final stop of a nationally touring mid-career retrospective at the Frist Art Museum, the exhibition spans two decades of Agha's artistic practice.Born in Lahore, Pakistan, and now based in Indianapolis, Agha draws upon her experiences as a woman and immigrant navigating discrimination, invisibility, and oppression. Her work also addresses environmental destruction and global inequality while incorporating influences from Indo-Islamic architecture, poetry, traditional craft techniques, and the California Light and Space Movement.The exhibition features both intimate mixed-media works and the artist's celebrated large-scale light installations. An American Story offers visitors a rare opportunity to experience the celebrated Cowan Collection outside its longtime home at the Parthenon for the first time in nearly four decades. Originally gifted to the city by James M. Cowan nearly a century ago, the exhibition highlights a defining era in American art and the artists who helped shape a distinctly national artistic identity.Featuring works by fifty-seven painters connected through shared artistic training and collaboration, the exhibition explores the evolution of American painting at the turn of the twentieth century. At its core are expansive landscapes and luminous plein-air works that celebrate the diverse beauty of the American environment—from pastoral countryside scenes to dramatic coastlines and forests.Complemented by an intimate selection of portraits, the collection reflects Cowan's deeply personal vision and his belief that art could capture the spirit, character, and aspirations of America itself. A Sensory-Friendly Evening invites families to enjoy an inclusive and engaging evening at Belle Meade Historic Site & Winery on Friday, July 17, 2026, from 5:00–7:00 p.m. Designed for guests of all ages and abilities, the event features sensory-friendly tours, hands-on crafts, games, and interactive activities across the historic estate.Families can explore themed activity stations throughout the grounds, including frontier games in the Doll House, artifact exploration and optical illusion activities in the Stables, creative crafts and reading spaces in the Carriage House, and a calming Sensory Room in the Garden Cottage complete with fidget toys, coloring pages, and quiet activities.The event also includes a community partner tent featuring sensory-friendly programming and resources from organizations such as the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park, and Therapy ARC dog therapy.
